Two years ago on Labor Day
weekend, four of us headed north to Maine to find few crowds, friendly
people and excellent accommodations in Freeport Maine. We stayed at Recompence Campground which is located close to town where LL Bean and stores are which make it very convenient. As much as any of us would like to say we want to rough it, there is certainly benefit in being able to take a ten minute drive to town and stop at Dunkin Donuts, to get fuel and snacks at a local gas station, and to have the fortune of a local supermarket. The staff was very helpful in directing us to beaches that are easily accessible, both north and south of Freeport. Being located in close proximity to the highway (15 minute drive to highway). Recompence had clean and well functioning hot showers, a convenience store, endless amount of wood for the fire, and large campsites over looking fields and the ocean marsh. The location allowed us to travel both north and south and hit many beaches in our 4 days there. Depending on swell direction and winds, there were many options for us. We called surf reports, brought our road and ocean maps, had great weather, we rolled the dice and scored great surf. We also had the pleasure of meeting another Boston surfer that went to Recompence every year. Unfortunately he did not listen to our recommendations for surf locations. The one day he went south, we went north and had epic conditions...he had blown out conditions. We went south another day had epic conditions, he went north and had choppy wind swell. It is important to check reports, and although you need to plan your trip, traveling to the right location at the right time of year is a major factor. It is always a gamble but some research can do you well. There are also skateparks in the area which will come in handy in case it is flat. One of our friends, who is a master in the kitchen and had never camped before cooked outstanding meals on the open fire to include lobster for dinner, and bacon and eggs for breakfast. This last fall we traveled to Nova Scotia and had mediocre surf. A week after we were there Nova Scotia had epic, clean and big surf. "If you want a unique surfing experience with few crowds, empty line ups coupled with the beautiful and unspoiled backdrop of coastal Maine Recompence Ocean Campground is the place for you!"
